A New School Year: Would You Like to Help?

New Hope Project

As part of our vision to see Cambodia develop, Khmer Friends has started a new project called New Hope Project (NHP). Our objective is to improve and support children’s health and education. This year we have started supporting a school in Kampong Thom Province that is located 25km from the city. The road to the village from the city is a difficult one on which to travel; it can take 1.30 hr to drive there depending on the weather. The school is called Camnna Primary School and it is located in Camnna Village, Sala Visay Commune, Prasat Balang District. Currently there are four volunteer teachers who staff the school, including the school director. This school started in 2015-2016. There are 120 kids in this village, but only 78 kids are able to study in the school because the building only has three classrooms. This year the New Hope Project has helped provide the local children with school materials for one year through support received from Ms Betty Zesiger  from US. There is an old saying, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. We are a language school. We see the value of teaching Khmer language to our students from around the world. We believe that education is the key to Cambodia’s overall development too. If you would like to support our work, you can do so. If you would like to know more details, or even see our project for yourself, please let us know!

Last weekend we visited three locations in Srarcang village in Kompong Thom province: 1/ SraeCang primary school, where we donated school supplies for 125 kids in grades 1 to 7;
2/ The forest activists’ community where we helped 44 kids in grades 6 to 12 with enough school supplies for one year; and
3/ for a widow and her family of four kids we provided support in the form of food.
Thanks everyone who supported us in this effort.  Without your help, we couldn’t do this.
A new school year will start in just a few months, so we are planning now to help needy young students in schools in Kompang Thom again this year. We’ll provide needed school supplies for many children – notebooks, backpacks, pencils, uniforms, etc., as well as basic hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes and toothpaste.
We have been helping in this way for five years, and each year the number of students we are able to reach out to has grown, thanks to the support we receive from friends like you. It costs approximately $40 to purchase the supplies for each student – so if you would like to help, you could decide how many students you would like to sponsor and make the appropriate contribution based on that. An easy way to make your contribution is through the GoFundMe page one of your supporters has created: https://www.gofundme.com/65n5gn-school-supplies-for-cambodian-kids.  All the money collected on that site goes directly to support the New Hope Project. Won’t you join us in helping these children get a good start?
On Saturday, July 27, we visited a community kindergarten in Prey Veng Province, where we were happy to provide backpacks, water bottles and story books to help the children learn to read.

“At Phum Thom Chas literacy school we gave school supplies to the children on their first day of school for the 2019-2020 school year, supported by Mr. Lawry Finsen, Ms. Yvette Dube’ and a number of friends who helped as well.  At the Forest Activists Community we gave school bags and water bottles to 107 kids, supported by Ms. Ileah Kang, Mr. Srun Chea, Mr. Russell Brine and Mr. Luke White. Thanks so much for all your support.
Merry Christmas!
We made Christmas special this year by visiting the Phum Thom Chas school and the Camnar school in Kompong Thom.  At both schools we held a hygiene day and a big holiday gathering with lots of tasty food for the kids.  At each school children received a lesson in how to properly wash their hands and brush their teeth.  Then they and their families enjoyed a delicious curry meal.  More than 100 people joined in the holiday celebration!  Thanks to everyone who helped make this great day possible!”
Merry Christmas!!
We want to give a big thanks to all the donors who helped us move forward on our goal of helping schools in the Kompong Thom area. We raised money which made it possible to help a number of schools and many children.  The progress we made recently is thanks to generous donations from friends around the world. That enabled us to help on various projects: digging a well and building a water reservoir at one school, constructing new bathrooms for another, and providing school supplies and uniforms for many children.  A big thank you to donors who helped us: Ms Betty Cavin Loftin Zesiger, Professor Lawry Finsen and his students at the University of Redlands, Ms Chelsey Ortega, Mr Srun Chea, Ms IIeah Kang, and Ms Shirley Enstad.

Khmer Friends Students from Around the World Help New Hope Project Kids Get Ready For School
Students who have studied at Khmer Friends School joined with a group of students from the University of Redlands in California, U.S. to raise money for school supplies for children in a village near Kampong Thom. The New Hope Project is helping a new school get off the ground in Phum Chas.  Students of Professor Lawry Finsen at the University organized a volleyball tournament to raise money, and friends and families helped as well, raising money needed to purchase books, backpacks, uniforms, hygiene supplies and more for some 40 children in the village.
